What is CONA?

NIWA’s Air Quality team have been conducting small exploratory studies in low-cost air monitoring since 2011 and we believe that new technologies may offer a quantum leap not only in air quality research and management but more importantly in community engagement.

After a set of small test deployments we are taking the next step by directly involving the general public to test the power of this new kind of information. From the winter 2015, NIWA will deploy a number of indoor and outdoor sensors in small New Zealand towns and test our ability to generate relevant and useful information from these low-cost sensors. The first project has commenced in Rangiora, on the Canterbury Plains, during August - September 2015.

These projects aim to empower the communities to manage their air quality by providing more timely monitoring data, for more locations in a form that encourages citizen participation and engagement in the issues.
